The Austin-Healey Sprite Mark I (1958-1961)

Venture by the Donald Healey Company and Austin which previously presented the succesfull Austin-Healey 100. Body design of the Sprite is also done by Gerry Coker. Initially the headlamps where to retract but due to costs the final car has them fixed on the bonnet, which gives the car it's distinctive look. This also brought to life the cars nickname: the Frogeye (or Bugeye in the USA).

The car was greatly recieved by the public and even had great succes in rallying and racing. Noteable succeses where 1st, 2nd and 3rd finish at the Sebring 12 hour race in 1959 and 1st in class at the 1959 Sestrieres Rally. The Sprite was also frequently seen at great events like the Rome-Liege-Rome, Alpine and Monte Carlo Rally.

The Sebring Sprite is a period upgraded version from the standard Sprite. The car recieved Girling disk brakes, chassis and engine improvements and was homologated on september 17th 1960. From this date on the FIA regulations also permitted the use of special bodies and a small number of Sebring Sprites were subsequently fitted with coupé bodywork in aluminium alloy and glassfibre. The name Sebring Sprite would later become a generic term for any Sprite with disk brakes and/or coupé or fastback bodywork.
